Systematic Distraction Training

Distraction proofing follows a careful progression from low to high distraction environments. Rate distractions on a scale of 1-10 and only increase difficulty when the dog succeeds 8 out of 10 times at the current level.
Start by adding mild distractions to known commands in familiar settings. Drop a toy on the floor during a stay. Have a family member walk through the room. Gradually progress to outdoor environments with squirrels, other dogs, and strangers.
The key principle is 'train at the edge, not over it.' Work just beyond the dog's comfort zone where they can still succeed. Pushing too far too fast erodes reliability. Record success rates to track progress objectively.
