Teaching Sit and Down

5 min

The sit command is the cornerstone of obedience training. Hold a treat just above the puppy's nose and slowly move it backward over their head. As their nose follows the treat upward, their rear naturally lowers into a sit. The moment their bottom touches the ground, mark with 'yes' and deliver the treat.

For the down command, start from a sit position. Hold a treat at the puppy's nose and slowly lower it straight to the ground between their front paws. Mark and reward immediately.

Practice in short sessions of 3-5 minutes, several times per day. Aim for 80% success rate before adding the verbal cue.
