Structured Exploration Exercises

10 min

Structured exploration exercises teach puppies to approach novel objects and situations with curiosity rather than fear. Set up a puppy adventure course using everyday items: cardboard boxes to climb through, plastic bottles on a string, crinkly tarps to walk across, and wobble boards to stand on.

Start with the easiest obstacles and let the puppy investigate voluntarily. Place treats on and around each item to create positive associations. Never place the puppy on an obstacle — let them choose to engage. Celebrate every approach with marker words and rewards.

Progress gradually by adding movement, sound, or height to obstacles. A puppy that learns 'new things predict good things' develops resilience that lasts throughout their life. Track each puppy's progress to provide accurate temperament assessments to buyers.
